   Recruiting

The Phoenix is the premier recruiting tool for the Detroit Fire Department. On a regular
basis, Phoenix members can be found in Detroit Public Schools, Community Centers, Churches
and at-large spreading the gospel of the DFD. Our members describe some of the benefits
and pitfalls of fire fighting encourage young adults to consider fire fighting as a career.
One such program is the DPS Public Safety Academy, which is a voc-tech partnership between
DPS, Fire, Police and EMS to offer state certifications to high school seniors in their
respective public safety field of interest. Another such program is the YO!(Youth Opportunity)
Program. Through the YO! Program young adults aged 17-24 were able to gain valuable experience
with the tools and training materials actually used by DFD in an effort to prepare them for a
   career in fire fighting.

   Mission Statement

The first cornerstone is that of working to promote a higher level of participation and
inclusion of minorities and women in all aspects of the fire service in the United States
of America; to encourage underrepresented groups to properly educate, train, and prepare
themselves for entrance and advancement in the fire service. The second cornerstone is that
of working to embrace the needs of communities that are negatively affected by the destructive
forces of fire. The organization will work to educate the public in fire safety and prevention
tactics as well as confront health issues in disproportionately disparaged communities.

   Community Service

The Phoenix of the Detroit Fire Department is an active community service agency. We
provide regular meals to senior citizens especially during the holiday season when
loneliness and depression can be at its peak. We provide meals for the homeless on a regular
basis in order to do our part in helping those less fortunate. We participate in the Motor
City Makeover annually to help keep Detroit beautiful. The Phoenix offers college scholarships
to Detroit Public School graduates every year. We are on the front lines of Angels' Night
an annual anti-arson campaign. Our organization's membership heads many, many little league
sports teams and participates in many, many community events.

   Burned Out Families

Every year hundreds of families in Detroit find themselves homeless as a result
of a fire. Many times, due to many circumstances, those families are under-insured.
That’s where the Phoenix comes in. Our organization offers immediate cash assistance
to those families to keep them off of the streets. The Phoenix also offers logistical
support for those families in connecting them with government and private agencies to
locate long term support. In those instances where there was a fatality in the fire,
especially when children are the victims, the Phoenix offers not only financial and
emotional support. Our organization offers up its members to serve as pallbearers for
the grieving family to ensure that they know that the DFD grieves with them. This is one
of the greatest community services our organization provides.
